My Favorite Designers: Milton Glaser

New column! Lets see if I can keep this one going…

I have lots of favorite designers, but Milton Glaser has been a favorite of mine since I was in college. His work is of course lovely but I’m more inspired by his demeanor and the way he speaks about design. I’m kind of horrible at turning my thoughts into words (thoughts into pictures is another story) so when I try to talk about how much I love design it ends up sounding like a page out of a 13 year old girl’s journal. I can really appreciate how eloquently he speaks of his craft and his unrelenting desire to learn. Every time I watch an interview with him I feel inspired and recharged, like maybe I could change the world with design.

I’ve posted this one before but it is my absolute favorite design-related video:

If you haven’t see the documentary To Inform and Delight, you should:

IKEA – Homemade is Best

This has been making the rounds on the internet for a while now but I keep forgetting to post about it. IKEA created this beautiful 140 page coffee-table book full of baking recipes. The images focus on highlighting the individual ingredients that go into each recipe. Drawing inspiration from high fashion and Japanese minimalism, they organized the ingredients into perfect shapes to create visually intriguing compositions. They remind me of Navajo sand painting and I love how each background color compliments the natural color of the ingredients. Whenever I watch cooking shows I’m always fascinated by how perfectly chefs seem to cut and measure things. Cooking is always a messy engagement in my kitchen.

Inspiration: Pizza Hut Top This Commercial

I really love the typography and monochromatic color scheme in this Pizza Hut Commercial.

Illustration Work of Scott Marvel

I stumbled across the work of Scott Marvel a few years back. I was at the gym watching a music video show put on by the local college, when I heard this beautiful song by Headlights come on. The video was nice as well, dark but charming. I wish I was able to find more back story on the artist and his style, but there’s not much on the internet about him and only a few other animations of his even exist (that I could find). Bummer. I really dig his style.

Inflated/Deflated

I’m really loving the simplicity of this series and the emotion behind it. The handwritten typography is really charming.
