Photo Dump: The Navy Yard

A short bike ride from our new digs is an old Navy Yard on the Cooper River. The whole area where we live used to be a navy base, it was shut down in 1996. In fact our apartment is old renovated base housing built in the 1950′s. It’s precious. The Navy Yard doesn’t look like much at first—a collection of old buildings, some abandoned and some still bustling with activity. Some of the buildings have been renovated into office space and many of the docks are leased out. Even with the moderate amount of activity, it feels like a ghost town. It’s hard to imagine it as it once was, but this place definitely has a story to tell. There’s a small community of individuals and businesses trying to make something happen over there. I’d love to see a revival, it’s a beautiful area with huge old growth trees, right on the riverfront with tons of character and charm.

There’s so much to see and photograph over there but I’m trying to pace myself. It’s a treasure trove of gorgeous warm textures, patterns, and architectural details. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
